Homes on the Barrier Island are most often characterized by location
Beachside - East of Hwy A1A (main access that runs north-south) or
Riverside - west of Hwy A1A. Many communities will have river access.

Since Indian River County has had a height restriction in place since the early 1970's, Vero Beach has a wide selection of single family homes available on the barrier island, but only 1 high rise condo complex. This somewhat unique feature is most noticeable south of the 17th street bridge, where a 5 mile stretch of the best beach on the island is lined with nothing but individual homes and a beach park on each end. The very low population density of this area makes "south beach" feel like you are on a private island.

Ambersand Beach - is an area at the far north end of Indian River County, where the island narrows, and many homes have "Ocean to River Access". Primarily single family homes, this area has some of the most affordable true direct oceanfront properties.
